The farm

The Farm below from up on the range

At Tiraumea the Tutaki river lies at the base of  the range  up behind the homestead. The river courses along through the valley, winding through rocky crossings with its hidden gold deposits. Only 5 kms downstream tourists flock to try their hand at gold panning.  Alongside are the fertile river flats that provide abundant pasture for the youngsters. After the initial nursery period staying close by around the house paddocks, they go further up onto the terraces to run and grow, this develops the muscles and turns out very confident, capable, sure footed young horses.    The weather in the valley can be changeable and dramatic.   The four seasons are all distinctively different from one another.  The valley has numerous enormous specimen trees including the 100+ year old oak that stands beside the homestead, its autumn colour is spectacular.  Beautiful stands of beech forest provide shade in the summer for the mares and foals.  Then there is the winter, bringing temperatures below -5.  All of our horses, young and old alike are covered, fed daily.  The daily interaction provides routine, with us, the farm vehicles and farm dogs.  We believe this is invaluable training in the life of a future companion mount or competition horse.
